FINE Gael director of elections, Phil Hogan has engineered a stunning success in his home constituency of Carlow-Kilkenny.
He and fellow running mates Sen John Paul Phelan and Pat Deering are assured of three of the five seats with the other two being filled by John McGuinness of Fianna Fail and Ann Phelan of Labour.
FG’s John Paul Phelan was just 1,190 short of the quota set at 12,291.
Sinn Fein will be happy having received 9.5% of the vote but the big losers are outgoing Fianna Fail TD, Bobby Aylward and outgoing Green Party TD and deputy leader, Mary White.
