After knowing each other for 20 years and living as neighbours for most of that time, a local couple has decided to tie the knot.
Jude Curran and Margaret (Peggy) McBride were neighbours living at 64 and 67 Hebron Park in Kilkenny, and got to know each other in recent years through attending the Kilkenny Presbyterian Church.
“I was talking to her at times and I was saying to the lads, ‘I hope Peggy doesn’t get any ideas’,” Jude said with a laugh. And then – “I got engaged to her.”
They also became close after her house caught fire just over a year ago and she moved to Dominic Street.
“I started helping her to try and get a new house and to get furniture – I would do that for anybody,” Jude said. “So I was calling to her every day to make sure she was all right. That’s more or less how it happened.”
They were married on March 30 in Kilkenny Presbyterian Church by celebrant the Rev David Moore, followed by a reception celebrated with their family and friends.
They then spent their honeymoon in Palma Nova, Spain, and despite falling on a boat and injuring his shoulder – including two hours spent in hospital – Jude said it didn’t spoil a thing.
“We enjoyed it so much. We went walking for miles around the town each day,” he said.
They are now back in Kilkenny starting their new life together.
