Going Latino for Luke’s

PEOPLE of all ages will be moving Latino style in a Zumbathon this Friday in aid of the Children’s Ward of St Luke’s Hospital.

PEOPLE of all ages will be moving Latino style in a Zumbathon this Friday in aid of the Children’s Ward of St Luke’s Hospital.

The fun event is the brainchild of Yvonne Roche, whose daughter Ava has been under the care of the ward a number of times.

“Ava was born in April 2010 and at four weeks she got very sick and spent a few weeks in hospital. She is now two and a half years old and has being in hospital quite a few times so I wanted to do smething my way of saying thank you to all the doctors, nurses and staff at the Children’s Ward for being so kind and so professional to Ava and my husband Paul and myself.

“When a child is in hospital it is a very stressful time for parents in my experience and the staff at the hospital have always been so caring, understanding, sympathic and professional and will always take time out to speak with the parent and reassure them even though most of the time they are under staffed and under pressure,” she added. Yvonne who practises Zumba with Rachel Nolan at the His n Hers Fitness Studio hopes that the money raised from the Zumbathon will go towards purchasing some of the practical things for that ward that might make life a little easier for all the wonderful people that are working in this ward. “When I decided to start this fundraiser a local business here in Callan Maher Great Gas owed by Michael Maher along with his son Donal and Michelle Kearney approached me about putting a collection box on the counter of the shop and we also organised a car wash which raised €600. On behalf of Paul, myself, Ava and our families I would like to take this opportunity to thank the staff and also the wonderful people who give up their time volunteering to visit and help out with the children.

The charity event will take place from 7330pm to 10.30pm this Friday at Rachel’s studio on Bridge Street in Callan when around 100 people will get moving for this great cause. “It is a Latin-base fitness dance and it is all about fun,” said Rachel.
