Kilkenny County Council is sending out letters to homes across the county this week to urge people to register for the household charge if they have not yet done so.
Some 65% of Kilkenny households have registered for the charge, but the Government has threatened to withhold around €800,000 from the council’s annual funding if a target of 70% compliance is not reached by the end of the year.
Some 21,000 of the estimated 32,000 Kilkenny households that are potentially liable for the household charge have either paid or registered for waiver exemption, according to the council.
Anyone who is liable for the charge but has not paid now owes €128, including late payment fees and interest, which will increase on a monthly basis if the charge is not paid.
Anyone who receives a letter from the council but has already registered for the charge is asked to contact the Household Charge Bureau at Lo Call 1890 357357 to confirm that the payment has been made.
