A 22-year-old man is in a critical but stable condition following an incident on board a Russian cargo vessel berthed at Belview port in Co Kilkenny yesterday (Monday) afternoon.

It is understood the crew member climbed down into the hold and accidentally slipped into the jaws of a crane grab while unloading bulk fertiliser shortly after 1pm.

It is believed he received crush injuries to his abdomen and was taken to Waterford Regional Hospital.

The scene was sealed off for a technical examination and the Health and Safety Authority is investigating the incident.

The Russian cargo ship MV Sormovskiy remains berthed at Belview Port.
