More than 6,000 racing enthusiasts are expected to descend on Gowran Park Race Course later this month for what will be the first racing event of Gowran Park’s centenary year and a celebrated national hunt race widely acknowledged as the highlight of the season at the Kilkenny race course.
Details have been announced of the forthcoming Goffs Thyestes Chase, which takes place on Thursday 23rd January at Gowran Park Race Course.
The Grade A race is the biggest national hunt race in the south east with a prize pool of €100,000. The first running of the Thyestes took place in 1954 and today’s Goffs Thyestes Chase is recognised as one of the key highlights of the Irish National Hunt season. Previous winners include the famous Arkle in 1964 who is still fondly regarded as the best steeplechaser ever. Other world-class Thyestes Chase winners include Hedgehunter and Numbersixvalverde.
Complimenting the Goffs Thyestes Chase will be the John Mulhern Galmoy Hurdle, a €40,000 race which has been won in recent years by Zaidpour and Gold Cup hero War of Attrition.
Separate to the racing, one of the most popular features of the day will be the Most Stylish Lady competition which carries a luxury €1,500 Kilkenny city centre shopping & leisure prize comprising a €500 voucher for Peaches the boutique, a €500 voucher for Murphy Jewellers and a €500 stay & dine package for the Pembroke Hotel. The competition will be judged by international model and Kilkenny native Karen Fitzpatrick. The winner will be announced from the parade ring before the Goffs Thyestes Chase at approx. 3.15pm.
Other attractions on the day will include a champagne tent from where the Most Stylish Lady competition will be judged, several catering offerings and a series of live music acts. “This year is the centenary of Gowran Park Race Course and 60 years since the Thyestes cup was first presented to Gowran Park. We have a lot to celebrate and would encourage everyone to come join us and enjoy an incredible day’s racing at a much-loved race course in its milestone year”, said Eddie Scally, General Manager, Gowran Park Race Course.
The Goffs Thyestes Chase takes place at Gowran Park Race Course on Thursday January 23. Gowran Park will open at 11am and the first race takes place at 1.15pm.
Tickets are available at Gowran Park on the day, priced at €20 for adults and €15 for OAP/Students. Group discounts are available by contacting Gowran Park on 056 7726225.
