Kilkenny College Sailing Team qualified for the Irish Team Sailing Nationals at the weekend in Schull. The Team in finished in the top ten and were placed second in the Silver Fleet. The competitors included Marc Cudmore, Scott Levie, Sean Landers, Heather O’Connor, Julie Power and Dougie Power. The team raced in Fire Fly’s and 420’s two of the most popular types of team racing boats.
There was extremely tough competition with Kilkenny sailing against Oranmore, Bishopstown, Galway, CBC and Skull to name a few. All of which train twice a week and were amused that a land locked team would enter an event that doesn’t train to the same extent as the other qualifiers!
The Number 1’s- Marc and Scott played team racing tactics to perfection and kept Oranmore and Bishopstown at bay to help win the races and secure them a second place in the Silver Fleet. To ensure a top ten finish skipper Julie Power and crew Sean Landers worked together and made the tactical decision to get off the starting line first and cover the other team. Dougie Power and Heather O’Connor put up with the tough sailing conditions and worked hard to keep up their place sailing like true professionals!
The event was originally to be run over the weekend but Sunday was a write off with the weather forecasted to be 30 knots plus. First gun for the competitors was at ten on Saturday morning and competitors didn’t get off the water until 6pm. The team put up great fights against all the teams with wind gusting up to 22 knots, torrential showers and competing against some of the top team racing schools in the country. The final sailing event on the sailing schools calendar will be the South-East Sailing Event which will be held in Waterford Harbour Sailing Club in Dunmore East on Friday.
