Responding to local demand the Butts Savings Bank at the Fr McGrath Centre, now in its fifth year, is changing its opening hours from 7.00 -8.00pm to Thursday 6.30- 7.30pm as of this week.
Hundreds of local families and children now save every week at their local bank for Christmas or special family events during the year. The Butts Savings Bank now has more than 300 members many of them children who are now saving a healthy six figure sum each year. Targeting children and encouraging them in weekly savings habit from their earliest years is a key objective of the community banks
The voluntary committee of the Butts Bank will hold their Annual General Meeting on Wed. 27th July at 7.00pm in the Fr. McGrath Centre – ALL Welcome.
Thanks to volunteer tellers and committee members, Anne Marie Clifford, Michelle Byrne, Teasie Brennan, Vice Chair Trish King, Chair Pat McAuley, Treasurer David Barry, Joe O’Grady, Irene King and Carmel Joyce for the time they volunteer each week to make this community savings bank possible.
The community savings banks were started five years ago by the Fr. McGrath and Newpark Close Family Resources centres as a pilot initiative to try and address the serious dependence of local families on high interest charging money lending companies.
They were supported from the beginning by Directors and former Directors of St. Canice’s Credit union – Teasie Brennan, Michael Walsh, Michael Sanders (MABS) and Marius Cassidy.
There are now 11 community banks running across Kilkenny and Carlow – including one in Hebron Park (Happe House), Millennium Court, Bishop Birch Place, Freshford, Urlingford, Callan and Bagenalstown Family Resource Centres.
