A 30-YEAR-OLD man has appeared at Kilkenny District Court charged with assault causing serious harm to his mother Siobhan Stapleton at the family home last Friday.
Niall Stapleton, The Gate Lodge, Glebe House, Thomastown appeared in court shortly before 1pm. Garda Brigid Good said she arrested Stapleton on May 30 at 9.28pm at Thomastown Garda Station. He was subsequently charged and made no reply after caution.
Inspector Liam Connolly said that there would be an objection to bail. Solicitor Mary O’Shea said that the main priority was the mental health and welfare of her client and that he had the full support of his family who are anxious that he get treatment and asked that she reserve the right to apply for bail. She added that her client had a history of mental illness.
Judge Gerard Furlong said that he had no hesitation in formally reserving the right to apply for bail. Ms O’Shea said that her client is a fully-qualified industrial design engineer who was not in a position to work and was on disability benefit. Free legal aid was granted to Ms O’Shea to include any psychiatric assessment.
Judge Furlong ordered that the defendant receive all the appropiate psycholgical and medical attention and treatemnt at his place of detention and remanded him to appear before Kilkenny District Court on Tuesday (June 5).
