Callan’s Bunscoil McAuley Rice has received permission from Kilkenny County Council to demolish its existing single- and part two-storey school and single-storey prefab and to build a new 16-classroom structure.

The planning permission for the secondary school includes a new two-storey school with GP hall, sanitary accommodation, stores, staff areas and library, out-buildings for oil storage and sports equipment storage, new car-parking layout with 27 spaces and set down to the front, with associated site lighting.

It also includes a large hard play area with a junior play area and three senior play areas to the rear of the school building. A playing pitch is to be located to the rear of the site on the existing green area. This will be separated from the hard play area by a 2.4m-high weld mesh fence.

As a condition of the planning permission, the school will have to pay a development levy of €21,488 to Kilkenny County Council upon commencement of development.
