THE LOUD barking of a dog alerted a local resident whose prompt actions foiled a burglary in a local supermarket.
Thieves gained access to Super Valu in Ballyragget through the roof earlier this week.
The alarm was raised by a local man who lives close by and contacted gardai after waking up to his dog barking.
“The gang entered through the roof. A neighbour’s dog made noise and woke his owner who saw a jeep outside the supermarket and contacted the gardai,” a garda spokesperson said. When gardai arrived at the scene they were met by a man, wearing a balaclava close to the scene. The man, in his twenties was arrested and questioned at Kilkenny Garda Station. He was subsequently released without charge and a file is being prepared for the DPP.
Gardai are looking for two other men who they believe were involved in the burglary. Anyone with information is asked to contact Kilkenny Garda Station on (056) 777 5000,
