THE PROMPT reaction of workers at a blazing oil depot averted loss of life last Friday.
The fire broke out at the EuroFuels depot near Mullinavat in South Kilkenny shortly after 10am. A driver noticed flames from the building, which was occupied at the time. An emergency response plan swung into action and workers were calmly evacuated. A lorry containing fuel was also removed from an adjoining yard. For a number of hours there was fears that there was a serious risk of explosion.
Fortunately no one was injured in the fire. The fire service and ambulance were at the scene and an exclusion zone was put in place. Train services between Waterford and Dublin were stopped and passengers ferried by bus. There were also lengthy diversions for drivers and smoke affected visibility on the motorway.
