St Luke’s Hospital hit by lightning

Power was lost temporarily at St Luke’s Hospital last night, when the building was hit by lightning during a thunderstorm over Kilkenny City.

Power was lost temporarily at St Luke’s Hospital last night, when the building was hit by lightning during a thunderstorm over Kilkenny City.

Back-up generators immediately kicked into life and kept the hospital functioning, however, phone lines and IT systems suffered damage and are not yet fully operational again. Staff are having to carry out a lot of IT work manually, and an emergency contact number has been set up on 056-7751133.

The thunderstorm struck Kilkenny at around 10pm last night, knocking out lights and setting off alarms all over the city. Kilkenny Weather says that more showers are again possible for today and Friday, and the outlook for the weekend is not good.
