A E65 million investment in South Kilkenny will create 135 construction jobs over the next 18 months.
The development will copper-fasten the position of one of the regions most important industries.
SmartPly at Belview, near Slieverue harvests timber from around the south east and processes it into environmental friendly, sustainable plywood.
The cash injection will be used to update and modernise the plant and ensure that the 150 people working there keep their jobs and that the 300 people supplying timber there keep their contracts.
A number of new positions will also be created once the work has been completed. Coillte which runs the plant has positioned itself intelligently to take advantage to of the pick in the global construction industry and its order books are full, ensuring more good news for Kilkenny and the south East.
Minister for the Environment, Phil Hogan said the news underpins jobs in SmartPly for 40 years and puts Coillte in an ideal position to exploit the upturn in the construction industry. He thanked the management of Coillte on their long term strategy for the company.
