A 64-year old Kilkenny man has died following a drowning tragedy at Ahenny Slate Quarry, just over the border in Co Tipperary.

A 64-year old Kilkenny man has died following a drowning tragedy at Ahenny Slate Quarry, just over the border in Co Tipperary.

The body of the man, missing since Saturday, was recovered on Sunday morning. Members of the Coast Guard and the Garda Water Unit led the search for the Windgap man. The alarm was raised around 6.30pm on Saturday after he failed to return from a swim.

Meanwhile, a 32 year old woman who was airlifted to hospital after being taken out of the River Nore in the city on Saturday is recovering in hospital. She got into difficulty at an unsupervised bathing area. An ambulance brought her from the river to James’s Park where the rescue helicopter landed. Gardaí say her condition is not serious.
