HUNDREDS of people fell foul of a scam last week at the Bank of Ireland cash machine in Castlecomer and it is believed that tens of thousands of euro were reomoved from their account.
A ‘skimming device’ was placed on the machine earlier this month which allowed the criminals involved in the scam to use the card details and gain access to funds held in the accounts. Many people may still be unaware that they were targeted as it most cases the card and cash is returned to the customer.
Gardai were informed of the scam last Friday and are investigating the incident. They are appealing to anyone who used the machine in the last fortnight to check their bank details and if they see any suspicious activity to report it to the gardai and to the bank. Gardai have confirmed that the exact total amount of loss to customers has not been established as a number of people may seem be unaware of the criminal activity. “A consiberable number of people have been affected and the investigation is ongoing,” a garda spokesperson said.
