MAYOR David Fitzgerald is inviting all of the previous Mayors of Kilkenny to city hall to help launch the first ever Mayor’s fund concert.
The current Mayor of Kilkenny will be joined by 14 surviving previous holders of the office of first citizen of Kilkenny on Thursday at 8pm at a reception in city hall to mark the launch of the Mayor’s Fund concert. The concert will be held in the Watergate theatre on December 9. Mayor Fitzgerald joked that he was leaving the selection of the acts up to people more knowledgeable in those matters but that he expects a great night will be had by all. He encouraged all the councillors to attend and asked that they try to bring some friends as well. All the money raised on the evening will go into the Mayor’s fund.
The Mayors fund provides much needed assistance to families over the winter period. In previous years it has provided everything from foodstuffs to fuel for hard up families. The Mayors fund is administered by the Saint Vincent de Paul which has been struggling to cope with the demand on its services as the economic situation worsens.
“The Saint Vincent de Paul have made no secret of the fact that they are under significant pressure this year,” said Mayor Fitzgerald. Cllr Paul Cuddihy (Fine Gael) praised the mayor for his initiative. “I think it is a great idea, I must declare an interest as a former mayor, but anything that will get money into the Saint Vincent de Paul is worthwhile,” he said.
