A DEFENDANT charged with arson, assault causing harm and possession of knives had his case adjourned for an updated probation report at Kilkenny court.
Solicitor Michael Lanigan told the court that his client came from ‘a very difficult background’. “His principal issue in life is that he is a heroin addict. It is positive that he adhered to a methadone programme apart from one slip. He has come a long way and has worked hard with the services. He is also well advanced in a course in horticulture that he attends five mornings a week.
“He still faces a serious challenge given the multiplicity of his difficulties but he has made considerable progress. He is a young man who has taken on board the opportunities that the court has given him. He has seen the inside of a detention centre so he knows what would happen if he drifts back into criminality and heroin addiction.”
Judge David Anderson adjourned the case for an updated probation report to July 17.
