IN the early hours of St Patrick’s morning, Kilkenny Gardaí were involved in the high speed pursuit of a vehicle around the city after it refused to stop at a checkpoint.
Gardaí were manning the checkpoint at Newpark Drive when a car approached and made off without stopping. Gardaí gave chase and at a roundabout on the Johnswell Road the driver of the car went the wrong direction around it.
When the pursuit concluded at Castlecomer Road, two males were arrested and a small quantity of drugs were found, while the driver was also arrested on suspicion of drug driving.
Eleven public order arrests
KILKENNY Gardaí are reporting that the St Patrick’s Festival weekend was reasonably quiet on the crime front although they did make eleven arrests for public order offences. They also made one drink driving arrest.
The majority of the arrests were made on St Patrick’s night with a Garda spokesperson explaining that ‘a lot of drink’ was involved in the incidents they were called to.
Thieves target match goers
DURING Monday’s Allianz Hurling League tie between Kilkenny and Waterford at Nowlan Park, the vehicle of a patron attending the game parked on the Hebron Road was targeted by thieves some time between 1.30 and 4pm.
The car was unlocked and two gear bags were stolen, however, they were subsequently located and the property was returned to it’s owner.
Gardaí are urging all vehicle owners to be vigilant when it comes to security and any witnesses or anyone with information on the incident is asked to contact Kilkenny Garda Station at 056 7775000.
