Recently elected Fianna Faill councillor Peter ‘Chap’ Cleere is considering putting his name forward as a candidate in the upcoming Dail by-election in Carlow/Kilkenny.
In a statement, Mr Cleere said “ There has been a lot of speculation around whether or not I will be putting my hat in the ring for Fianna Fáil. My supporters and many party members have been lobbying me hard and putting me under pressure over the last couple of days to allow my name be put forward to contest the convention.
“I am incredibly grateful for the support I received in the recent local elections and if I felt those people, along with the people of Carlow and Kilkenny would think I could make a positive contribution to their communities if I stood and was fortunate to be elected - then I would have to consider it strongly.
“I will consult with many more party members and of course my family and friends over the course of the summer before making a final confirmation of my intentions,” the statement concluded.
