The family of the 27-year old man charged with the brutal murder of Kilkenny shop manager, Mairead Moran (26) have issued a statement in the wake of his court appearance.
In a highly unusual and significant development, Shane Smyth’s family have expressed their devastation and deep sadness in relation to the tragic and horrific events of Thursday night.
“We as a family would like to extend our deepest condolences to the Moran family during these very difficult times. Our thoughts and prayers are with them,” the brief statement was issued through solicitors, Poe Kiely Hogan Lanigan.
Shane Smyth, Flat 3, McGuinness House, Evans Lane, Kilkenny appeared before a special sitting of Kilkenny District Court on Saturday afternoon charged with the murder of Mairead Moran on Thursday night at the Market Cross shopping centre at Holland and Barrett health food store where Mairead worked.
The shop is closed and outside the front is full of floral tributes and personal messages from everyone in the shopping centre and from many of her heartbroken friends. Mairead is the daughter of Pete and Margo Moran, who run the local shop in Kilmoganny and has two sisters Colette and Michelle. She went to secondary school at St Brigid’s in Callan and studied Complementary Therapy at the Waterford Institute of Further Education.
