Local secondary schools will be closed tomorrow (Tuesday) as teachers take industrial action over proposed Junior Cert reforms.
All second-level schools in Kilkenny will be picketed on the day by teachers who are members of the ASTI and the TUI unions. The teachers are taking the strike action over proposals for Junior Cycle education, which they say will undermine standards, equity and fairness.
The Junior Cycle Student Award is set to replace the Junior Cert from 2017, and the unions are bitterly opposed to the move. Up to 27,000 second-level teachers all over the country will participate in tomorrow’s strike action, closing more than 730 schools and affecting 330,000 students.
