There are plans to replace a retiring garda in Inistioge, Cllr Sean Treacy (FF) has been informed.
Speaking at a meeting of Kilkenny County Council’s joint policing committee, Cllr Treacy said a garda presence was vital in rural areas, and he noted that Inistioge-based Garda Paul Martin was due to retire soon.
“It is going to be needed to keep a lid on crime in rural areas,” Cllr Treacy said.
Thomastown-based Supt Kevin Dolan indicated that another garda would subsequently be based in Inistioge.
“We will certainly be looking for the right person. We hope to replace him at this point in time. I think I can tell you that we will replace him,” Supt Dolan said.
He also paid tribute to the retiring garda: “It will be very difficult to find somebody to take over from Paul. He is an absolutely excellent member of the gardaí.”
