A PUBLIC meeting on the importance of small schools to local communities will be held at the Lyrath Estate Hotel in Kilkenny on March 15 at 8pm.

The meeting takes place against a background of measures introduced by the Government and by Education Minister Ruairí Quinn. The new policy aims to increase the pupil-teacher ratios in two, three and four-teacher schools, and to reduce the number of teachers in these schools.

Rural communities believe they are being targeted in a policy that they say will be of little economic benefit but which will have huge social implications.

Concerned parents and teachers in Carlow-Kilkenny have joined forces to organise this public forum. All parents and concerned community members are encouraged to attend, and they will be able to express their opinions on this topic.

Public representatives will also be invited to attend to hear at first-hand the strength of public opinion.
