Appeal on Glanbia plant

The decision to grant planning permission to Glanbia for a dairy processing and manufacturing facility at Belview Port has been appealed to An Bord Pleanála, writes Tess Felder.

Permission for the plans, which include an administration and laboratory building, production building, natural gas metering compound and security, were approved by Kilkenny County Council for the site in the IDA Science and Technical Park at Gorteens, Belview.

An appeal of the decision has now been lodged, however, with appellants named as Chris and Claire Ogilvie White, Josephine Cantwell and the Bellevue Residents Association.

The new facility is being planned to meet the increased demand that is expected to come with the abolition of milk quotas in 2015.

It is intended to be two-thirds the size of Glanbia Ballyragget, which is the largest integrated dairy processing facility in Europe.

A decision on the appeal is expected to be given by January 23, 2013, according to An Bord Pleanála.
