Next year’s local elections will see a fresh new face vying to represent Kilkenny City, with the announcement this week that 24-year-old Patrick McKee will throw his hat in the ring.
The Fianna Fail party member, who works at Smithwicks and Sons solicitors in the city, will be the first person from his family to seek election. McKee was educated at St Kieran’s College, and is also a graduate of University College Cork, where he studied law.
“I have not always been motivated by a desire to involve myself in electoral politics,” he said.
“It’s only since the recession hit, when I began witnessing the personal difficulties individuals and families have and continue to be faced with that I considered politics as an option.”
The move will add another fish to an already smaller pond, as new government reforms means there will be fewer seats and electoral areas.
