Staff and shoppers at a Thomastown supermarket were subjected to a terrifying ordeal yesterday (Tuesday) evening when two masked raiders robbed the premises.
A substantial amount of cash was taken from Lidl in Thomastown when two men wearing balaclavas entering the store at 9pm.
The men, who were brandishing a firearm and waving a knife demanded cash from the staff who had just closed the store. Several shoppers were in the carpark when the incident took place.
The raiders then escaped across the carpark and made off in a getaway vehicle, which was abandoned a short time later in Paulstown. A garda spokesman confirmed that the staff were ‘badly shaken but physically unharmed’ and appealed to the public for assistance.
The getaway vehicle is believed to have been in the area for at least an hour before the robbery. The vehicle, a navy Land Rover Discovery jeep has a registration number 06 CW 325. It was reported stolen from Blessington in Co Wicklow last month.
Anyone with information is asked to contact gardai in Thomastown on (056) 775 4150.
