Over 12.5m collected from second home charge

KIlkenny County Council collected €2.75 million from the €200 charge on owners of second homes since it was introduced in 2009.

KIlkenny County Council collected €2.75 million from the €200 charge on owners of second homes since it was introduced in 2009.

The charge is applicable to all homes that are not the principal residence of the houses’ owner. In Kilkenny there are almost 4,300 houses that are subject to the charge.

A spokesperson for Kilkenny County Council said “Kilkenny County and Borough Councils receive approximately €860,000 per annum from the 4,300 houses to which the Non Principal Private Residence tax relates. The money received is used to fund Council services. This new income source has helped offset to some degree the impact of the €7m (32%) reduction in Local Government Fund grant from €22m to €15m over the period 2008 to 2012.”

Second home owners in Kilkenny will not be exempt from the €100 property charge to be introduced this year.
