One-third have medical cards

Some one-third of people in Carlow-Kilkenny hold medical cards at present.

Some one-third of people in Carlow-Kilkenny hold medical cards at present.

The total population stands at 145,659 people in the two counties, according to the 2011 Census information released last week.

And 56,376 people in Carlow-Kilkenny hold medical cards, according to the Department of Health.

The figure, released by Róisín Shortall, minister of state in the department of health, is “representative of the number of eligible people that hold medical cards as of March 1, 2012.”

State-wide, the total number of people with medical cards is 1,736,958, according to Deputy Shortall.
