A KILKENNY man bagged a gold medal at the Full-Power Irish Nationals in Powerlifting at the weekend. It was one of a number of victories for local club Fennelly Fitness.
It was also John Ryan’s second national win this year (winning the Irish Single-Lift Championships earlier in the year). He weighed in at just over 81kg and totalled 605kg in all three lifts.
Additionally, Ian Phelan won the GPC Nationals in the 90-100kg category, weighing in at 100kg and totalling 560kg in all three lifts. In his very first competition, young Adam Phelan won the teenage 90kg body weigh category in the GPC Nationals, with three new records. Adam totalled 467.5kg, and Mark Duffy took first place in the Single-lift bench press, in the 110kg body weight division.
In the sport of Strongman, Davy Jones, who recently took first place in the Deadlift in the Junior category at the National Single-lifts, competed in the Republic of Ireland Strongest Man qualifiers along with another club member Lee Fagan. Both qualified to compete in Ireland’s Strongest Man later in the year.
This has been one of the most productive weekends for the club with many competitive members training hard and continuously preparing of competitions. Next stop for John is the European championships and World Championships later in the year.
