THE HIGHEST honour in the city will be bestowed on one of it’s best-loved sons when charity fundraiser and well known musican is given the Freedom of Kilkenny City.

The 92-year-old still plays the saxophone with his band The Wetland Orchestra every Tuesday and has raised monies for a variety of charities over the decades.

He is also a regular visitor to the patients and residents of the city’s hospitals and nursing homes.

His daughter Mary Shortis said that the family were both ‘proud and delighted’ that Pat is set to receive the award.

Pat was originally born in Maudlin Street and has been living in Newpark for over 50 years. His wife and greatest supporter May passed away seven years ago and the couple have four children - Sean, Patrick, Mary and Helen and nine grandchildren.

The ceremony will take place at City Hall on June 21.
