The community of Ballyragget rallied round to offer help and support to a local family after their house was destroyed by fire on Christmas Eve.
The family residence at Oldtown, Ballyragget was gutted in the blaze. A hydraulic platform was used to fight the fire which took over five hours to bring under control.
The house was occupied when the fire broke out at approximately 9pm. All the occupants managed to escape and fortunately no one was injured.
Several units of Freshford, Castlecomer and Kilkenny Fire Service attended the scene.
Relatives, friends and neighbours have rallied around to offer what support and help they can.
“This is a terrible tragedy for the family, the loss of their home, a home they worked so hard to provide. Literally all they now possess is the clothes on their backs, everything else was burned to a rubble The family are grateful for the numerous relatives and friends who rallied around with offers of practical assistance,” said Cllr. Maurice Shortall who was among those on the scene and has liased with Director of Services at Kilkenny County Council John McCormack to provide alternative accommodation.
