Fennelly competes in World Strong Man and wins a qualifier

The World Strongest Man 2012 competition was held in Los Angeles last week and Kilkenny native James Fennelly competed against the strongest men on theplanet.

The World Strongest Man 2012 competition was held in Los Angeles last week and Kilkenny native James Fennelly competed against the strongest men on theplanet.

He put in a Titanic performance, facing up to some of the most famous names in the sport. James stood along side World’s number 1, Zydrunas Savickas as well as other big names such Derek Poundstone, Terry Holland and others. Although he didn’t make the final rounds his performance in the Qualifier Events was epic, even taking first place in the Deadlift with a 355kg lift for 11 repetitions. Other events included Alas stones weighing up to 200kg and a Superyoke frame carry of 450kg.

“It was a grueling but rewarding experience and having the opportunity to represent my country on the world stage and on international television is something that I relished,” James explained. When I was younger I dreamed of being on TV competing with the most famous names in the world of strongman, so finally achieving this was a dream come true,” the Kilkenny man said.

Weighing in at 20 stone and standing 6ft 3ins, James was one of the lightest competitors with the likes of Iceland’s Strongest Man weighing in at 30 stone at a height of 6ft, 10’ James has already won Ireland’s Strongest man four times and has competed internationally in Europe’s Strongest man and Giants Live, against the top strength athletes. His has had national and international TV coverage for a number of years and can be regularly seen in action on Eurosport. His entry into the World’s Strongest Man sees him at the top of his game. World Strongest Man will be aired on EPSN and Channel 5 over Xmas.

Meanwhile it back to his gym, this week for the globe trotting athelte at Fennelly Fitness, based at Unit 17 Hebron Industrial Estate, Kilkenny to continue training and helping others to get in shape. “We opened our new premises in July and since then we have gone from strength to strength in terms of membership. We have a fully experienced staff team in place who are also succuessful former competitive athletes and our premises is fully equipped for strength training, fat loss and general fitness,” James explained.

James will be on hand from now until Christmas at Fennelly Fitness, training for future events and helping other to achieve their goals with the additional staff team.
