Local TD John Paul Phelan voted for the Protection of Life during Pregnancy Bill, which passed last night in the Dail.
The Fine Gael TD waited until Wednesday night to declare his hand. He had previously refused to rule out voting against the bill were certain amendments not made. He had expressed concerns over the section nine suicide clause – concerns which he says were addressed.
There was a total of 165 amendments to the document tabled for discussion. In total, five Fine Gael TDs voted against the change in legislation.
Other local TDs Phil Hogan, Pat Deering and Ann Phelan all voted in favour. The bill passed by 127 to 31 meaning it will now progress to the Seanad.
