TWINS Amy and Katies Jones-Elliott from Glenmore in South Kilkenny have defied the medical odds having been born 87 days apart.

TWINS Amy and Katies Jones-Elliott from Glenmore in South Kilkenny have defied the medical odds having been born 87 days apart.

Their mother Maria (34), who was carrying twin girls went into labour four months early and gave birth on June 1 to Amy weighing just 1lb 3oz.

Maria remained at Waterford Regional Hospital and almost three months later gave birth to Katie. Attempts were unsuccessfully made to induce the second baby, after which time her and her husbamd Chris decided to wait and let nature take its course.

It is understood that the 87-day interval between Amy and Katie is a world record.
