Two Kilkenny stores have made it to the much coveted shortlist of The Irish Times Best Shops in Ireland.

Glasraí & Goodies in Gowran and Rudolf Heltzel on Patrick Street in the city have been selected from an incredible 28,000 nominations submitted by the public.

Rudolf Heltzel is shortlisted for the Best Window category and Glasrai and Goodies will be vying to be crowned the Best Artisan Shop and Greengrocers in the country.

Proprietor, Siobhan Lawlor said: “The nomination means a lot to us at Glasrai & Goodies, especially as we are such a small deli. Our customers have also been unstinting in their support for our locally-sourced produce which we proudly build from month to month. From the local trout farm to the gardener who supplied us with two beautiful bunches of grapes this week, local is at the core of Glasrai & Goodies.”

Meanwhile Christopher Heltzel said all the staff at Rudolf Heltzel were thrilled to see the shop mentioned under the Irish Times Best Window Displays.

“We had no idea that our shop had even been put forward, so thank you very much to those who nominated us. It is very much appreciated.

“A special thank you also to Maeve Lynch who creatively dresses our window, constantly coming up with new ideas. Each new design has to compliment our jewellery and not compete with it, which makes the task all the more difficult. We also try to celebrate any event or festival going on in Kilkenny through the window display, with the current one representing Kilkenny and Tipperary going head to head in All Ireland Hurling Championship Final this year,” he said.

This country-wide search seeks to find Ireland’s favourite retailers as voted by their customers.

Orna Mulcahy Editor of The Irish Times Saturday Magazine commented about the competition “Over the summer we put the question to our readers - Tell us about your favourite shops. We were overwhelmed by the response from readers who nominated shops they love across ten different categories. .”

The nomination process was overseen by our expert panel of judges, made up of six well known industry figures with decades of retail experience between them.

The winners will be announced in The Irish Times Magazine on September 6.
