The number of people being caught speeding in Carlow/Kilkenny has exploded since the introduction of the Go Safe speeding cameras.
The number of speeding tickets that were handed out with out stopping the driver have increased by 291% since the introduction of the privately operated Go Safe speeding cameras. The most recent figures show some 3,600 people have been caught speeding by the speed camera vans.
Supt Nevin said that he didn’t take any pride in the huge increase in the number of people being caught. “Gardai have noticed a huge increase in the number of people being caught speeding.
“I don’t take any pride in this. The location of the speeding vans are all on the Garda websites. So I’d urge people to check them before they make a journey,” he said.
Garda Nevin said that the first Go Safe prosecution to be challenged had come up in court recently. The defendant was caught doing 109 kmph in a 100 zone. The judge had let the defendant off with a caution.
Other road traffic offences were down in Kilkenny. The number of mobile phone detections were down by 20% and the number of people caught with out a seat belt had also declined substantially.
