NEIGHBOURS in the quiet housing estate, Larchfield Court were visibly shocked and horrified to discover that a man was stabbed to death on their doorstep earlier this morning.
One local resident who lives near the apartment said: “I was asleep and heard nothing. I was so shocked when I walked out this morning to find gardai all over the place and that a man had been killed,” she said.
Liam Connolly, who only moved into the estate in recent days, said that he was at home at the time of the incident but also ‘heard nothing’. “I am totally shocked. It is always a terrible thing to hear but when it happens on your own doorstep it is hard to take in. I feel for the victim’s family. I have a young son. This is a very frightening thing,” he said.
Another resident Kieran King said that there had ‘never been any trouble before’. “This is a very settled area,” he said. Cllr John Coonan, who lives in a nearby estate, Ardnore, said that ‘the community was very upset’. “My thoughts and prayers are with the people involved,” he added.
Gardai spoke to residents entering and exiting the estate and detectives from the National Bureau are on their way to the scene to carry out a full forensic examination.
The victim, a 21-year-old from Laois, was stabbed outside an apartment at approximately 1.30am. His remains have been taken to Waterford Regional Hospital where state pathologist Marie Cassidy will carry out a post-mortem later today.
Another man also suffered stab wounds and is being treated at St Luke’s Hospital. Gardai are waiting to interview this man and have arrested another male who is in custody at Kilkenny Garda Station.
Chief Supt Mick McGarry appealed for anyone in the vicinity who saw anything suspicious to contact the gardai in confidence.
