Adrian O’Brien and Shirley Mills, from Rosehill, Kilkenny, who married in 2006, have studied in tandem since 2008 when Shirley started her Master’s in Education.

A year later, Adrian, who had already completed the OU Diploma in Design and Innovation in 2001, inspired by his wife, recommenced his studies to work towards his BSc Honours in Technology. With a primary degree in Engineering and the Diploma behind him, Adrian was able to pursue further study with the OU.

The couple supported each other through assignments, travelling to tutorials and the sacrifices that were needed to complete their degrees.

The Open University has centres in Dublin and Belfast with a full-time staff of 60 and around 400 associate lecturers across Ireland. For more information, see www.openuniversity.co.uk/ireland.
