A BUSY summer programme kicked off this week for Kilkenny Recreation and Sports Partnership who have teamed up with the Kilkenny Aqua Canoe Club to introduce local young people to the sport.
Groups from The Drum, The Fr. McGrath Family Resource Centre and Kilkenny Scouts have all taken part in taster sessions of kayaking on the Nore. Despite high water levels and a fast flowing river, or possibly because of this, all the groups were left wanting more. The club will run sessions on Friday nights over the summer at Greens Bridge and for the first time are providing camps in Kells and Kilkenny so there are plenty of opportunities to stay involved.
KRSP are inviting anyone interested in Judo Assist to join their Saturday morning sessions. Anthony Delaney from the Kilkenny Judo Club and his team of volunteers have introduced Judo to children with additional needs. Judo is one of the only inclusive sports which is suitable for a wide spectrum of disabilities. This is due the pure nature and culture of judo with its standing techniques and moves (throws) which can also be done from the knees and ground techniques and moves (grappling, holds) ensuring there is something for everyone’s capability and mobility. There is a clear focus on individual ability and the physical, social and emotional benefits to participants and the aim is to concentrate on what the student can do.
For the first time, KRSP are offering a week long inclusive summer camp catering for children with additional needs. Activities on the camp include horse riding, swimming, arts and crafts, river bank forage and kayaking. To book your place contact Caitriona on (056) 7720870. KRSP are also assisting Down Syndrome Kilkenny with their annual camp and again more information is available from the office.
KRSP is also running 2 multi sport camps working closely with local clubs. The camps take place in Loreto from 16th -20th July and Thomastown from July 30- August 3. Both camps run from 10am to 2pm and are very affordable at €40 for the weeks activities and places can be booked by contacting the office on 056 7720870.
