Council seeks vow on hospital service

Kilkenny County Council is due to write to Health Minister James Reilly to seek written assurances that hospital services in the region will be maintained, writes Tess Felder.

The decision was made at the council’s meeting on Monday as concern was expressed about the circulating speculation on the future status of Waterford Regional Hospital. The issue was raised by Cllr Cora Long (FF), who attended a recent walk in Waterford in support of the hospital.

Several other members were adamant that no downgrade was on the cards for the Waterford hospital, but they said that they too would welcome written confirmation from the minister about the continuation of the region’s health services into the future.

“It is not a question of downgrading; it is a question of reorganisation,” said Cllr Tom Maher (FG).
