Two members of Macra na Feirme are due to visit Ethiopia later this month.
Joseph Wall from Mullinavat, Kilkenny and a member of Mullinvat Macra, and Teresa Brennan from Ballylinan in Laois and a member of East Laois Macra have both won a bursary from the Joe Rea Bursary fund to visit Vita’s Potato Centre of Excellence in the Gama Zofa region of southern Ethiopia.
Departing on January 25, both members are making final preparations for travel including visa arrangements and vaccinations. The members will prepare a report on the project with recommendations on how Macra could support the Vita project in Ethiopia.
Under the Vita Potato Scheme, local farmers can take out a ‘loan’ of a bag of seed potatoes that can be returned the following year alongside a donation of another bag. In such a way, it is hoped that farmers will be provided with seed for years to come and that millions of people will be reliably fed.
The Joe Rea bursary fund was established by the family of the late Joe Rea, Richard Rea Agri Ltd, Agricultural Consultants and the Farm Apprenticeship Board. Joe Rea was a lifetime supporter of Macra, rising through the organisation to become national president from 1967 to 1969.
