A number of items of correspondence have been damaged in a fire in the external postbox on the railings of the pedestrian entrance to Government Buildings on the Hebron Road.

Affected items would have been posted between 2pm on Monday and 8am yesterday (Tuesday). Anyone who posted anything during these times can contact 056-7715100 between 9.15am and 5pm to check if their correspondence has been received or if it has been damaged.

Staff will assist all customers who need to provide replacement letters, forms or documents. The Department of Social Protection has issued a statement saying it regrets any inconvenience caused to affected customers.

The post box has since been replaced and the Gardaí in Kilkenny have been notified of the incident.
