Michael D Higgins is topping the polls in Carlow Kilkenny, according to current tallies.
The Labour Party candidate is at 39%, with independent Sean Gallagher at 32%, Sinn Fein’s Martin McGuinness at 12%, Fine Gael’s Gay Mitchell at 7%, independent David Norris at 5%, Dana Rosemary Scallon at 3% and independent Mary Davis at 2%.
The numbers are based on boxes being opened for most of the Ballyragget electoral area, over half of the city and five in the Thomastown electoral area.
In the city there are almost twice as many votes for Higgins as for Gallagher, with rural votes split more evenly, according to Cllr Sean O hArgain (Lab), who is posting regular updates on Twitter.
