WHAT I USED TO KNOW ABOUT BRIDGE AND FORGOT – Novices mainly. Fourth highest leads and the rule of eleven: Fourth highest leads and playing ‘third hand high’ are fundamental to communication between defenders, as demonstrated in the previous issue of Bridge Corner. Partnership communication is improved by applying the rule of 11 which helps to locate significant cards in an opponent’s hand. It works like this: You make the reasonable assumption that the card led is the fourth highest in that suit. Take the lead card, say the 4 of Diamonds; subtract 4 from 11; result 7. There are seven cards higher than the 4 between dummy, your hand (you are defending and declarer.

For example: Partner, West, leads the diamond 4; dummy has diamond 1087; you East, hold diamond Q65, 11 minus 4 = 7.There are seven cards higher than the four between dummy, your hand and declarer. You can see six of them: dummy’s ten, eight and seven plus your queen, six and five. Conclusion: declarer has one card higher than the four. The benefit, in practice, is that if declarer beats your queen with the king to win the first trick, you know that all of partner’s remaining cards in the suit are winners. An example from a complete deal next week.
