Horse racing is more popular in Kilkenny than in any other Irish city, new data has found.

An analysis of online search data using Google Keyword Planner by sports fashion retailer JD found that horse racing is queried 699 times per 10,000 people in Kilkenny each month.

Despite coming first, it was hardly a photo finish for the Marble City as some way behind in second place was Limerick, with 528 searches per 10,000 people.

The sport is third most popular in Galway with 512 searches, whereas there are 479 on average each month in the capital, Dublin.

According to the same research, which looked at search data over the past 12 months, found that Camogie is also more popular in Kilkenny than any other Irish city.

On average, 63 per 10,000 people search for the stick-and-ball sport in Kilkenny each month. This is almost double the search volume of the next closest city, Waterford, where 35 per 10,000 look up the sport.

In addition, looking at which sports are most popular in Kilkenny itself; association football is searched by just under one-in-three each month, with 2980 queries per 10,000 people. Second place is split between rugby union and the aforementioned horse racing, both on 699 per 10,000.
