Hopes growing that Leinster Senior Camogie Final will go ahead on Saturday

he ongoing shorts v skort dispute means the Kilkenny senior camogie team’s Leinster final against Wexford is still in doubt.

Kilkenny are scheduled to face Wexford in Saturday’s Leinster senior camogie final at Netwatch Park in Carlow and the early signs are that both teams will fulfill the fixture despite the controversy surrounding skorts continuing.

Along with Laois and Carlow who are competing in the Intermediate Final beforehand, it's expected that all four counties will wear shorts but will change into skorts if instructed.

Just last weekend the Munster camogie final between Cork and Waterford was postponed the night before the proposed fixture with the Munster Camogie Association releasing the following statement.

“As the committee in charge of the Munster Championship, we have reviewed the situation regarding the Munster Final,” read a statement from Munster Council Chairperson Christine Ryan.

“As the current camogie rules of play are still in place and the players have indicated they would not be prepared to play the game in shorts, the decision has been made to defer the game in the best interests of all players and officials involved.

“The details of the rescheduled fixture will be released in due course.”

A special congress has been called for May 22 where a motion would be considered, which, if passed, would allow players to wear either skorts or shorts but even since the proposed Munster decider, there has been further issues.

The Munster intermediate final between Cork and Kerry, scheduled for this weekend, has been deferred until after the special congress while in similar circumstances to the Kilkenny and Dublin clash last week, the Leinster Minor Shield final involving Offaly and Dublin was delayed until both teams changed from shorts into skorts.

To further complicate what has turned out to be a huge own goal for the sport in the last week or so, the All-Ireland championship is due to commence next week so the wriggle room for a refixture of the Leinster Final is minimal at best.

Whatever happens all eyes will be fixed on Carlow this weekend and the vote next week as the sorry situation looks to be nearing a conclusion.
