Local councillors have unanimously objected to plans to develop a windfarm on the Kilkenny-Carlow border.

Their views were noted at a special meeting of Kilkenny County Council held earlier this week to discuss the matter.

Of the seven wind turbines planned, three are planned to be located in Kilkenny at Coolcullen, Cloneen and Coan East.

Due to the scale of the proposed windfarm, applicant White Hill Wind Limited was able to submit their planning application directly to An Bord Pleanála as a Strategic Infrastructure Development (SID).

By doing so, local councillors and the planning department at Kilkenny County Council have no final authority when it comes to granting or refusing the application.

Their concerns will however be documented in a Chief Executive’s Report that will be submitted to An Bord Pleanála for consideration, as part of the application process.

Fears around the visual impact of the turbines and concern around the application’s visual impact assessment were cited as issues by both councillors and local authority planners.

The case is due to be decided by An Bord Pleanála in late June.
