Gardaí have issued a warning to motorists after a number of missiles were thrown at vehicles from bridges over motorways in the south of the country in recent weeks.
In one such incident, a motorist was travelling back to their home in Kilkenny via the M8 when a projectile, believed to be a rock, was flung from the flyover just outside of Cahir in Tipperary.
The projectile hit the car and caused damage to the windscreen.
Luckily, the motorist was able to safely pull into the hard shoulder, however they were left shaken by the incident.
In recent months there have been similar incidents reported.
“Over the weekend gone by, there were incidents around the Cahir District," confirmed Sergeant Declan O'Carroll.
"On Sunday evening a person driving on the M8 saw people on a bridge – these people then threw an item from the bridge which struck the windscreen causing damage.
"These are serious incidents and Cahir gardai are appealing to people to be aware of the potential fatal consequences of these actions."
Anybody with any information in relation to these incidents are asked to contact An Garda Síochána.
