Population of Carlow Town exceeds that of Kilkenny City

Carlow Town now has a greater population than Kilkenny City, according to the latest census data.

Newly released figures have Carlow Town’s population at 27,351 and Kilkenny City’s at 27,184.

The Carlow Town population figure includes the area of Graiguecullen, which spans into County Laois.

In the previous 2016 census, Kilkenny's population stood at 26,512 while Carlow's stood at 24,272.

Drogheda, with a population of 44,135, remains Ireland's largest town.
